The best way to win a World Cup finals is to play well and win games.
For Fabian Senderos, the Portuguese striker was on that last note as he scored the decisive goal for Portugal against Japan in the last 16 to seal his place at the final.
Senderos is one of the world’s best goal scorers and has been a key member of the Portugal team in recent years, but the 21-year-old also knows that success will come with his own personal style of play.
After the game, he said: “It’s been a great tournament for me, the atmosphere was amazing, it was the best moment of my career.
It’s something that I’ve always been looking for.”
I had a great experience and a great team, and I’ve been really happy.
The only thing I’ve changed is that my goal is to be the best I can be and hopefully win a final.
“For a player who is known for his speed, Senderys ability to adapt his style of playing to the opponent has been one of his best traits throughout his career.
When asked how he adapts to different opponents, Sesteros replied: “I try to play to their strengths, so if I have a chance to score, I try to score as often as I can.”
If I can’t score, it’s not the game.
That’s how I think, that’s my mentality.”
Having a lot of confidenceSenderys has had since arriving in the country in 2013, but he has yet to score in the first two rounds of the World Cup.
“In Brazil I felt really good,” he said.
“The feeling was great, it felt really nice to be in the team, to play against the best.
I felt like I was in a really good group and it was nice to see that in the game.”
In the World Rugby Sevens Series, Sererys scored two tries, the first in a loss to the All Blacks in the second round and the second in a win over the Springboks in the final in Durban.
He added: “They are good teams, and they play in a very aggressive style.”
It’s good to play for the national team and I’m happy with the result and I look forward to the rest of the tournament.
