The Dallas Cowboys and their top priority is the return of a franchise quarterback, and the only quarterback who’s not likely to be traded is Tony Romo, according to multiple sources.
The Cowboys are likely to move on from Romo in free-agent negotiations and instead pursue a QB in the first two rounds of the draft.
If the Cowboys do that, they could use the pick to select another quarterback, according.
The team also could target a quarterback with a high draft pick, such as LSU’s Teddy Bridgewater or Washington’s Josh Allen.
Romo, however, is a priority.
“They’re going to look at any team in the draft that has a quarterback, a player they believe they can get at that spot, and they’ll be going after Tony Romo if they can,” one source said.
“He’s got a chance to be the best quarterback in the game.
If they can’t get him, they’re going after a quarterback.”
The Cowboys will have to trade their No. 3 pick, which is tied for ninth among NFL teams, if they are to move up to No. 4.
If Romo is available, Dallas will target the best available quarterback, but it’s unclear if he’ll be available for that price.
The only quarterback the Cowboys are certain to consider at No. 1 is Baylor’s Baker Mayfield, according of sources.
A second source said the Cowboys were not planning to move ahead with the No. 2 pick.
The decision to pursue Mayfield will be made by the team’s general manager, Scott Pioli, who will likely have a chance, the source said, to make the move.
Mayfield is coming off a strong season in which he completed 68.4 percent of his passes and threw for 3,879 yards and 24 touchdowns.
He also ran for more than 1,200 yards and eight touchdowns.
Piolis is known for his willingness to gamble on young players, but he has to have faith in Mayfield and his ability to succeed.
If Mayfield falls to the Cowboys, it would be the third time the team has made a trade for a No. 8 pick, according, the team source.
The draft will be held Thursday, Dec. 17, at 1 p.m.
It will be the first time in franchise history that no quarterback is drafted with the first pick in the 2017 draft.
With the Cowboys having to pick first, the second pick is not expected to be a top-10 pick, with the team aiming to take the best player available.
“The team knows it has to make a move if it wants to move back to No 1,” one NFL executive said.
